Why ecological sponsorship matters for companies

Ecological sponsorship as a strategic lever for companies: brand image, talent, compliance, opportunity, and real impact with Semisto.

A strategic lever for lasting impact

The world is changing, and with it, the expectations of consumers, investors and employees. Across Europe, companies are increasingly called on to play an active role in the ecological transition. Ecological sponsorship is no longer just a philanthropic gesture; it’s a powerful strategic lever for companies that want to combine social responsibility with economic performance.

An undeniable competitive edge

Improving brand image Consumers prefer companies that are engaged. By supporting ecological projects, a company builds its image and stands out from competitors.

Attracting and retaining young talent Younger generations look for meaning in their work. A company that invests in protecting the environment attracts motivated, loyal talent.

Meeting environmental regulations Legal requirements around sustainability are getting stricter. Getting ahead of these changes by supporting worthwhile projects helps avoid future costs.

Opening new economic opportunities The greening of the economy is creating opportunities. Engaged companies can benefit from tax incentives and grants — see the note on Belgian tax deductibility below.

Semisto: an inspiring example

Our association Semisto is a strong example of the positive impact of ecological sponsorship. Our ambition? To turn Europe into a vast network of food forests, supporting biodiversity and food resilience.

By supporting Semisto, companies take part in:

  • Planting food-producing forests and regenerating soils
  • Training citizens and professionals in permaculture and agroforestry
  • Scientific research toward a healthy, diverse diet

Why funding coordination matters just as much

Funding concrete projects like planting food forests is essential — but it’s just as important, arguably more so, to fund the coordination roles within Semisto. Here’s why:

  1. To multiply our impact: effective coordination structures our efforts, mobilises more partners and ensures rigorous project follow-up.
  2. To ensure initiatives last: without a solid coordination team, projects risk lacking coherence and durability.
  3. To make the best use of resources: efficient management means every euro invested is used more intelligently, avoiding wasted time and energy.
  4. To help the model replicate: with an organised team, good practices can be documented and reproduced elsewhere, amplifying our projects’ impact.

Avoiding greenwashing

Ecological sponsorship shouldn’t be a mere communications tool, but a real, measurable commitment. To weed out companies only looking to greenwash their image without real impact, it’s essential to:

  1. Demand transparency: Semisto publishes the actions it funds and their results, backed by environmental performance indicators.
  2. Favour long-term commitments: one-off support for Semisto is commendable, but a lasting commitment guarantees real transformation and meaningful impact.
  3. Check alignment with our values: partner companies need to share our principles of sustainability, ecosystem regeneration and transparency.
  4. Assess real impact: by favouring companies that measure and report on their ecological contribution, we make sure they’re not just doing marketing.

How can companies get involved?

By funding Semisto’s coordination roles, they support the people who structure and manage our initiatives, enabling a broader, more lasting impact.

By supporting food forest plantings, they take concrete action for biodiversity and food resilience.

By sponsoring courses and workshops, they help young people, the general public and professionals learn to design food-producing landscapes.

By investing in research and innovation, they support the development of sustainable solutions for urban and peri-urban agriculture.

By involving their employees in volunteer activities organised by Semisto, they offer an enriching experience that strengthens team cohesion.

Measurable, valuable impact

Companies that engage in ecological sponsorship with Semisto can also measure and showcase their impact through:

  • CSR reports including key indicators on carbon footprint reduction and biodiversity contribution.
  • Engaging communications campaigns highlighting their involvement.
  • Participation in environmental labels and certifications.

Ecological sponsorship is a unique opportunity for companies to have a positive impact while strengthening their market position. Supporting an initiative like Semisto means investing in a sustainable future, where companies and nature thrive together. That said, this commitment needs to be sincere, measurable and aligned with a genuine will to change.

A note on tax deductibility

Semisto operates as a Belgian non-profit (ASBL). Sponsorship and partnership with Semisto are open to companies anywhere — the ecological and reputational benefits above apply regardless of where a company is based. Tax-deductible giving specifically, however, follows Belgian tax rules and is only available to Belgian taxpayers (companies and individuals subject to Belgian tax). If you’re a Belgian company, get in touch to discuss a sponsorship structured for tax deductibility; if you’re based elsewhere, we’d still love to talk about a partnership on its own merits.
